Trees are one of Central Indiana homeowner’s most valuable assets. They provide shade to reduce home air conditioning costs. Shaded back yards are more enjoyable on hot and humid summer days. As they manufacture food, trees take carbon dioxide from the air and replace it with healthier oxygen. Trees enhance a community by attracting business and increasing property values. These workshops will cover the benefits of trees, tree selection, planting and maintenance. Practices like tree topping and “volcano mulching” are extremely hazardous to trees and create added expense for homeowners. Learn more about these and other practices at the respective Tree Care Workshop at the appropriate library nearest you. The RC&D and Plant-A-Million Program received grant assistance from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust to host these workshops. Additional sponsors helping the RC&D include appropriate local libraries, Central Indiana SWCDs, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ (IDNR) Community and Urban Forestry Program.
Central Indiana’s local Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) and Hoosier Heartland Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council have kicked off a campaign to “Plant a Million” or more native trees in Central Indiana. Local residents can be a part of this fantastic effort by attending this workshop. Attendees will also receive a copy of “Your Yard, Your Trees – A Homeowners Guide”. This book (a $5.00 value) is compliments of the local SWCD and the RC&D Council. The 75-page full color book covers almost everything you ever wanted to know about yard and neighborhood trees. In addition, many local SWCDs sponsor native fall tree and shrub sales.
