Besides the traditional livestock on farms in Indiana such as cattle, hogs and sheep there are alternative types of livestock that perhaps can be more profitable and not be based on a commodity market as much. Examples of alternative livestock are:

  • Goats (meat, milk, cheese, soap)

  • Llamas and alpacas

  • Free-range livestock

  • Rabbit

  • Bison, elk and deer

  • Aquaculture (fish, shrimp, etc.)

  • Bait (Minnows, worms, etc.)

  • Canned, dried, smoked or other preserved meat

  • Guide service with horses and dogs for hunting, fishing, backpacking

  • Horse boarding

  • Pasture fed – chickens, turkeys, cattle, hogs,

  • Pet stores – selling animals raised on the farm

  • Game dressing – ducks, geese, pheasants, etc.
