Hoosier Heartland: Alive and Well

Thanks to the hard work of our many volunteers and the great generosity of the Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District, Hoosier Heartland is still going strong. You can reach us at the contact info below, though if you call, be patient; the phone will go right to voicemail and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

Our committees are getting back into the swing of things and we have wonderful chairpersons to thank for that! It will soon be time to start planning for next year, so please contact us if you are interested in attending one of our committee meetings. And speaking of meetings, the next full council meeting will be held September 19, so mark your calendars - we'll post info right here closer to the date.

How to contact us: The old phone and web information is just the same. We have re-located to the district office on the south side of Indianapolis - 6960 South Gray Rd. Suite C, Indianapolis, IN 46237 (just off Southport Rd. and I65). Drop us a line!

Natural Resource Enterprises Program
The Natural Resource Enterprises (NRE) Program was established to educate non-industrial private landowners about sustainable natural resource enterprises and compatible habitat management practices. The Natural Resource Enterprises Program is focused on effectively delivering information to landowners and community leaders that will encourage informed decision-making regarding the management of land and enterprises. The NRE program was originally established by the Mississippi State Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Cooperative Extension Service at MSU. The Natural Resources Enterprise Program in Indiana is coordinated by Purdue University Department of Forestry Natural Resources and Indiana Farm Bureau in partnership with Mississippi State University Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Help Available for Farmers Fighting Damaged, Wet Fields

USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has announced that Indiana NRCS has $6.5 million dollars available in Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) funding for 2011.  WRP is the federal government's largest wetlands restoration program.  Through it NRCS provides technical and financial assistance to private landowners and Indian Tribes to restore, protect, and enhance wetlands that have been degraded or converted for agricultural uses.

For more information about WRP and to find out the 2011 GARC rates for your county, visit the Indiana NRCS WRP Web site at: http://www.in.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/WRP/WRPhomepage.html Interested producers should contact their NRCS district conservationist at a USDA Service Center to determine eligibility. Visit http://www.in.nrcs.usda.gov/contact/directory/field_offices.html to find the nearest USDA Service Center.  Visit the News page for more details and contact information.
